Wellness seems
to be one of the most popular buzz words in use theses days. Wellness
also covers an incredibly diverse range of practices. My personal emphasis
is for eastern holistic medicine. Eastern holistic medicine has a history
of thousands of years, and its techniques used and believed in by thousands
or even millions of people. I do not have so much faith in more modern
trendy fashions like crystal therapy, or magnetic therapy, I have no reason,
or should I say no evidence to think that these practices actually work,
and therefore am very skeptical. I personally have had many problems with
my back or neck, shoulders, posture, etc,. Firstly I was seeing conventional
doctors here in Austria but things did not get noticeably better. At one
point I thought that I would have to change my job / profession, which
is something that I did not want to do. I got to the point were I almost
had the cortisone injections in my back, that would have just relieved
the symptoms without fighting the problem, and then it would normally
be more injections every three months. At this point I made a good decision,
I waited until I got an appointment with a shiatsu doctor in Innsbruck
(Gunther Jais). The shiatsu treatment worked really well and started the
ball rolling for me. I have studied ancient Thai massage in Thailand,
now I have been to four different schools and done a total of three months
solid study. The problem with the massage is that I can do it to other
people but I need the treatment myself. Through yoga I have been able
to treat myself and if I can keep up the discipline to do regular practice
then I can avoid problems with my body. I have been Meditating on and
off since I was 16 years old, it has always been the way for me to sort
my head out, when things are complicated, confused, or just difficult
it is meditating that helps me get my head back into a good place. Holistic
medicine means to treat the whole person, this could also involve changes
of lifestyle or even career. In the same vain I believe that a lot of
the practices whether it be Thai massage or yoga or acupuncture (acupressure)
all have their roots in the same system, or that they are all related
and therefore complement each other as forms of treatment. |
